Search Engine Optimisation is a minefield of dos and dont's pretty much controlled by the mightly Google itself. Over the last ten years, SEO has always been about how many links you can get back to your site. However in 2012 Google introduced two new algorithyms to their collection called Penguin and Panda. These two updates have totally changed the way SEO gurus operate, now unable to dominate the search engine resuts pages by pointing thousands of different types of links to a website in order to push it further up the listings, these gurus have to work a little smarter.
The Panda update was introduced to fight websites that copy content from other websites. Also it mainly targets scraper and affiliate websites that server no other purpose than to duplicate the purpose of branded websites. These are also classed as "thin" websites that offer nothing more than small amounts of information that is already available in much better quality and quantity on other sites.
The Penguin update is a complex algorithym that analyses the amount of and type of links that point back to a website. It has caused much upset to website owners and webmasters rendering around 3% of websites dead in the water with no easy way of recovering.
The best example in order to understand would be to compare two different websites that do the same thing:
Website 1: GoCompare.com (That annoying opera singer spearheading the car insurance campaign)
Go Compare is an extremely well-known brand of car insurance company in the UK. They have many links back to their site with a mix of anchor text rotating between phrases such as car insurance, cheap car insurance and many links with just the term Go Compare.
Having the term Go Compare as an anchor text link back to their site has reinforced to Google that the company are not trying to falsify search engine listings with anchor text link phrases. This is why after Penguin, Go Compare continues to flourish.
Website 2: Powerseeker.co.uk (A website that sells on car insurance using the Go Compare car insurance facility)
Powerseeker is a website which uses the car insurance forms from other sites, Go Compare being one of them.
As Powerseeker were not a big brand they didn't feel the need to have the anchor text of Powerseeker or Powerseeker Insurance linking back to their site. They simply used a variation of key phrases that people would tpe into the serch engines such as cheap car insurance. In 2012, the Penguin update classed that too many of these links with anchor text that falsifies search engine results pages on too many websites, will treat the target web page as spam. Therefore millions of websites have thousands of links built by SEO gurus over the years which have now killed their rankings.
The only way to recover from Penguin is to manually have these links removed.
If your traffic has sigificantly decreased since the end of March / April 2012 the chances are that you have been subject to a non-manual spam penalty (Penguin). Your only real choice is to right this wrong by attempting to remove these said links then applying to Google for a Reconsideration Request. This request can be done through your Google account and must be a thorough request (not just a one-liner like "Hey, my site has disappeared and I have tried to remove the links by emailing everyone, can you put it back please?)
